What reviewers say

Most reviewers say the GX2 lives up to the toughness Ugly Stik is known for. An OutdoorHub tester found the drag held up well on a 14-inch bass and the Clear Tip let him feel a spinner working. He also found the ultralight version too light for lures over 1/4 oz. Beginner forums agree on durability but point out the rod is heavier and less sensitive than graphite rods, with basic guides and reel seat. The common verdict: a good first rod, a kids' rod or a truck backup, not a tournament rod.

Good

  • Very durable rod, hard to break
  • Pre-matched rod, reel and size, so no guesswork
  • Smooth enough drag for the price
  • 10-year rod warranty
  • Wide range of sizes from panfish to catfish

Not so good

  • Heavier and less sensitive than graphite rods
  • Basic reel; retrieve is fine, not refined
  • Ultralight versions can't throw heavier lures
  • Maker-site price is higher than some reviewers paid at retail

Who it's for

New anglers, kids and anyone who wants a backup rod that can ride in the truck. Skip it if you want a light, sensitive rod for finesse bass fishing.
