What reviewers say

BetterTrail's March 2026 review calls them a middle-of-the-road pole that handles day hikes and short backpacking trips without trouble. Its testers liked the comfortable grips right out of the box, the foam extension for choking up on climbs, the easy-to-read length marks and the two basket types. They felt some flex under heavy loads or steep descents, and noted plastic lever locks, non-replaceable tips and a long collapsed length. REI shoppers rate them 4.1 of 5; the main gripe is slick plastic levers that are hard to open. BetterTrail suggests the REI Co-op Traverse for more comfort at the same price, and says the Trail Back is nearly the same pole for about $20 less.

Good

  • Light for a telescoping aluminum pole
  • Comfortable grips with no break-in
  • Easy length adjustment
  • Trekking and snow baskets included

Not so good

  • Some flex under heavy loads
  • Plastic lever locks can be slippery and stiff
  • Long collapsed length for small packs
  • Tips not replaceable, per BetterTrail

Who it's for

Casual hikers and weekend backpackers who want reliable, adjustable poles at a fair price. Trail runners and fast-and-light hikers should look at folding poles that pack shorter.
